4.0 star ratingIt was Cheap and Cheerful, all we wanted was a base and it suited our needs.01 September 2008
4.0 star ratingThe airconditioning was very good! The water of the shower did not have a stable temperature.25 August 2008
4.0 star ratingVery helpful reception staff, clean and air conditioned! A beautiful building and right in the middle of Barcelona. Our room only had a window out into the inner courtyard but it wasn't a major problem.09 September 2008
3.5 star ratingVery centralWould have liked to have been shown to room, it was very difficult to find17 September 2008
3.0 star ratingVery interesting architecture inside the public rooms. Some taxi drivers will not drive up this street to the hotel so we had to carry our luggage for about 50 metres. We were then robbed at the hotel entrance. Apparently this happened to another couple only a month previously. The police advised us that this is a bad location. There were about 50 tourists at the police station all with similar stories. Something needs to be done to minimise this in Barcelona.10 September 2008
4.0 star ratingFriendly environment and always felt safe. Very good positioning within Barcelona, easy access to everything. Decor amazing in the reception and dining area. Rooms clean and tidy with air-con, much needed!!! I would stay again.Breakfast choice was a little limited. Having stayed there five nights, and five breakfasts, it would have been nice to have something more than joghurt, cheese, ham, bread, croissant and cakes. Some may say good, but after five days ?!?! Some balconies would have been tricky for families with young children, especially in buggies.25 September 2008
3.5 star ratingvery beautiful design ,staff very kind ,good location.breakfast can be better, coffee terrible ,in april closing down for two years23 September 2008
3.0 star ratingGood location for The Ramblers - if that's what you want.A bit like a prison with inward balconies, echoes and very noisy.26 September 2008
4.0 star ratingGood situation for exploring the city being right next to the Ramblas. Staff were all very helpful and pleasant.Very noisy at night seemed to be a constant stream of people passing by outside the window all night.05 October 2008
2.0 star ratingThe hotel was in a central location so this was spot on.The hotel however was not so great due to the room being of a very low standard and very noisy. We were able to hear every detail of conversations in the rooms around us and every toilet flush. The finish of our room was like something out of the 1960's and I would not recommend the hotel to anyone. I was only glad that the bedding was clean even if the room was not.02 October 2008
4.0 star ratingThe reception and dining areas are beautiful. The common areas are also very nice. The bathroom was exceptional and the whole place was exceedingly clean. The beds were comfortable too.The room itself was badly in need of decoration and very cramped, it appeared that the idea was to get as many beds in as little space as possible. To be fair though we were only there two night and spent very littl time in the room so it was adequate.10 October 2008
4.0 star ratingThe hotel was easy to find just off the Ramblas down a side street, easy check in and front staff excellent. Excellent facilities around especially the Ramblas and only a short walk to the Port and Marina to see all Yachts both small and very big. Out of hotel and turn right towards The Ramblas is a brilliant Irish Bar, made welcome here as the Irish do!!The hotel has old furniture in it and has had some improvements done but final works hopefully to be done in the near future. Corridors could be noisy at night with latecomers coming in.11 October 2008
5.0 star ratingThis hotel is in a fabulous location, the desk staff were friendly and efficient, the room was immaculately clean as was the rest of the hotel, it's charming and full of character.Very noisy late at night (people walking overhead and wheeling cases etc) due to the floors being marble etc03 October 2008
3.5 star ratingexerlent location. reception staff v helpful.starting to look abit shabby, doors/windows could do with a lick of paint.04 October 2008
2.5 star ratingThe staff were all helpful and attentive. The bathroom was not fit for purpose. The shower was the worst that I can recall in a hotel. The toilet facilities were poor.13 October 2008
3.5 star ratingFun atrium. Central. Pleasant desk staff.I booked two rooms for for of us. The 4th floor room smelled of drains. The Ist floor room was fine.27 October 2008
2.5 star ratingGood position for Ramblas and St Joseph MarketRoom opposite our friends being used as a knocking shop. Noisey school parties shouting and running around late at night and in the early hours of the morning(not English Kids who were well behaved) No bar facilities this was not mentioned in the hotel information.29 October 2008
4.0 star ratingvery central.Staff very friendly & helpfulunable to open window as led to open acess for anyone through central public area31 October 2008
3.0 star ratingFriendly staff, no problem with english, very good localisationRestaurant was closed in the morning for breakfast. On second night checked-in large group of german youths, they were partying very loud and they have played in football on corridor until late midnight, that was no staff reaction on that. Room was very dusty, bathroom remember better times, especially shower. There is no carpets in the room. From my window i couldnt see nothing. Big heavy windows which can be opened only by somebody strong. I think that is what i can get for 142 GBP for 3 nights.17 November 2008
4.0 star ratingrooms need updating hotel was very noisy as all the floors are tiles and you can hear every noise17 November 2008
2.5 star ratingEasy check in process. Friendly Staff. No language issues. Good central location. Easy to find.Rooms are very very basic. En-suite facilities not great. ok for 1 or 2 night stay but no longer. Caters for large groups of school trips which are very noisy. Decor could do with refurbishment. If I go back to Barcelona I will be looking for a different hotel.17 November 2008

4.5 star ratingGood position just off La Ramblas.Unusual decor, designed by Montana who designed the beautiful Music palau. All tiles mosaics wall paintings etc .Beautiful dining room and breakfast room Next to Liceau theatre.Would stay there again.29 November 2008
3.5 star ratingIdeal location - right in the centre of Barcelona For a long weekend, hotel was adequate and the price was very reasonable. The hotel itself was very noisy and there were a number of individual parties going on till 6am. Didn't get much sleep.25 November 2008
4.0 star ratingFantastic characterful old building in the heart of Barcelona21 November 2008
2.5 star ratingGreat location for sight seeingDon't think hotel had been udated since it was built.....very very basic12 December 2008
3.5 star ratingAll in all the hotel was suitable for our requirements for a short holiday break-5 days. The staff were very friendly, helpfull and polite. The room we had was very clean and linen / towels changed daily. The food offered was a continental breakfast in with the price and was very adequate for our needs.Possibly tea/coffee making facilites in the room would be an advantage-after a long day out sightsee-ing. 05 December 2008
4.5 star ratingFriendly Staff, Simple breakfast, Good Location, Central Heating, comfortable beds, cleanNo Kettle for tea etc06 December 2008
4.5 star ratingFrom the minute we booked into the hotel we found all members of staff very friendly and only too glad to help when we needed it.Although the hotel was ideally situated close to the Ramblas on the right, to the left of the hotel it was a bit seedy but it would not deter us from going back to Hotel Espana again.06 December 2008
4.0 star ratingWell presented and clean throughout, excellent value for money.Fairly basic, shower did not work very well.15 December 2008
3.5 star ratingLocation was great and beautiful dining room/entrance hall (dining room designed by famous Barcelona names of the 1900's)Our room was in the more modern ajoining annex, so unfortunately we had no window to the outside and the room was drab and depressing. No possibility of getting anything to drink except for a vending machine, and the only English speaking TV channel was CNN05 January 2009
4.5 star ratingThe hotel was nothing special, but good location and good value for money.13 January 2009
4.0 star ratingVery clean, staff all helpful.Needs a lick of paint !01 February 2009
4.0 star ratingVery clean. Beautiful, interesting, historic building "shabby chic". Very central, within walking distance of main attractions. Room fairly basic but perfectly adequate. I would stay here again and recommend to others.Reception not very smiley. Not offering any advice etc. Bar and restaurant not open - it was January, though. Breakfast OK but not much variety.28 January 2009

2.5 star ratingcentral bathrooms nicefull of teenagers on school trips - very noisy rooms very basic breakfast like having school dinners01 April 2009
2.5 star ratingI would recommend this hotel only to students.the hotel was full of students and at night and in the early hours of the morning they ran around making alot of noise making it difficult to sleep. I would not recommend this hotel for this reason. the breakfast had no fresh fruit or cereal and the orange juice was frequently empty04 April 2009
4.0 star ratinggreat position. good breakfast. rooms clean and adequate for short stay. building, decor and architecture very impressive.bathroom extractor fan very noisey. view from room not brilliant.anthony twist11 April 2009
2.5 star ratingThey charged for the use of the safety box.14 April 2009
3.5 star ratingLocation great for short break in Barcelona. Relatively cheap compared to alternatives for a family of four requiring 2 rooms. Requested two rooms adjacent to each other which was given, although separated by corridor. Buffet breakfast adequate with unlimited amounts, which was useful with a family with large appetites.Room given received no natural sunlight and looked out another window, despite request for rooms with a view if possible. Pervading smell of drains at times , particulalry in rooms in the late evening. Staff notable in the brevity of information given, information re breakfast times not volunteered at booking or any other useful resources for visitors. Several notices re restriction on guests eating own food, however TV lounge occupied by younger guests each evening eating food. Not really bothered , as can see why they would choose to do this as eating out so expensive , so why not drop the notices! 24 April 2009
3.5 star ratingAfter we complained about the first room we were given, the hotel staff found us another room for the second night until the rest of our stay. This room was lovely and, for this reason, I would visit the hotel again, but only if I could be sure not to get a room like the first one!! It is ideally situated, very close to the Ramblers. The breakfast was lovely. The room we were initially given was absolutly aweful. It smelt. There was no natural light and no windows to the outside, only to the interior of the hotel. It was very run down and seemed dirty. Even the beds smelt.Deb30 April 2009
3.0 star ratingThe breakfast room was a shambles. There was one girl working but not working hard enough...when we arrived for breakfast all of the empty tables had used plates, cups, etc on them (why didn't she clear them away?) and there was very little food available to eat (why didn't she kep the table stocked?). VERY POOR.24 April 2009
3.0 star ratingRooms overlooking the road are very very noisy.21 May 2009

3.5 star ratingQuality of the food was high and the public rooms in the hotel where well designed( they are actually mentioned in some tourist pamphlets as a great example of their kind). The hotel is situated only 100 yards from Las Ramblas. The room was small with no coffee/tea making facilities.Single traveller15 May 2009
4.0 star ratinggreat location hotel just off la rambla. loads of character and charm. would have liked to finish evening there with a nice glass of wine but as no bar area we had to go to a nearby place instead.15 May 2009
3.0 star ratingGreat location, nice cold aircon, quaintrude staff, small roomCapester7301 June 2009
3.5 star ratingToo much noise and echo facilitated by the outside area of the hotel.02 June 2009
3.0 star ratingIt is of architectural significance and some of the interior decoration of the public areas is very attractive but not well-cared for. The gentleman who seemed to be on reception most of the time was friendly and helpful. The croissants at breakfast were excellent (but the rest of the breakfast was not). The location is very convenient, being within walking distance of the airport bus terminus and ideally placed for sight-seeing.The room was very small with just space for two single beds pushed together and a few cheap bits of furniture (quite unlike the photo on the hotel's website). The en suite was very basic with no complimentary toiletries, no bath mat, no hooks and a shower head that just hung squirting water down the wall. The breakfast was equally disappointing - industrial quality fruit juice, just-about acceptable coffee from a push-button machine and a buffet that consisted of only very ordinary ham and cheese.SteveB2117 June 2009
4.5 star ratingWell situated to explore Barcelona, clean comfortable accomodation, good breakfast to start the day.Jim and Jan02 July 2009
4.0 star ratingthe hotel is in a prime location halfway along las ramblas and with a metro station just at the end of the road which makes it a perfect base for all activities. there's maid service everyday and the rooms are a decent size with a good bathroom.due to the design of the hotel there is an exceptional echo so at night you can hear every little noise and every door being opened and closed.16 July 2009
2.0 star ratingThe location of the hotel. We had to change room once because the first one offered was insulting. Hot water was out of service for one day. I left a pair of trousers in the room and I never recovered them. The staff was merely functional.18 July 2009
2.5 star ratingVery beautifulRosa28 August 2009
3.0 star ratingLocation was ideal for tourist attractions. The dining area was lovely & it was good that there was always someone at the front desk, no matter what time we went past. The rooms weren't the best (beds were camping bed style). But then we weren't planning on spending much time in the room so it didn't matter too much.27 August 2009
3.5 star ratingReally close to the city, clean. Air condition works. Moderate price. The breakfast standard is rather low by deault, and even that isn't followed. Happend more days, that they were out of juice and bread (!) at one hour before the end of breakfast time. No hook for towles in the bathroom. The only elevator is not reliable.Greco02 September 2009
4.5 star ratingi went there with my wife and we really enjoyed our stay in this hotel ....actually we stayed just for a night but it has been very easy to commute there . I'm not used to leave comments about hotels but it deserve it. It was AMEZING.rikoks04 January 2011
5.0 star ratingFantastic location, very central and pleasant. Clean, great decor. A historic building worth a vist to the bar. Rooms are nicely ddecorated and very comfortable with all good amenities. Loved it!Due to its location in the very center of town/buildings there is limited natural light ie windows in the rooms.06 March 2012
5.0 star ratingThe hotel is a modern and very classy. When we arrived at the hotel we were amazed at the modern and quality feel of the hotel. All staff where very friendly and helpful. The rooms where exellent and I cannot fault the hotel at all. We definitly will be staying here again. Springer11 September 2012
4.5 star ratingGreat central location. Beautiful building. Rooms very modern and clean. Rooftop bar and pool were excellent. Would return.Room was quite small. Toilet cubicle was very narrow meaning you couldn't really shut the door whilst using the toilet if you were taller than 5ft 5 (which we both are).11 July 2013
3.5 star ratingBeautiful building and a great location. The room was nicely modern, but not large. Free Wifi is a nice change from some rip-off hotels. We had robes and slippers as well as free soft drinks and snacks in the Deluxe room. The large rectangular wash basin was very attractive, but totally impractical, it took up almost all the counter top and was only about 1.5" (37cm) deep, so very hard to use. The breakfast buffet was all cold and a very limited choice, one of the poorest I have had in a long time, you could pay extra for cooked items. We ate in the restaurant one evening and found the menu to be limited and the meal was really mediocre with no side dishes served with the main course, on top of which I got a mild case of food poisoning, I suspect from the four skinny prawns which formed part of my starter.21 September 2013
