Thailand Tsunami Hotel Damage
The tsunami damage in the affected holiday destinations of Thailand has been
largely cleared up and the major resorts and hotels are ready for business for
the new tourism season 2005/2006. If you find room
rates for the hotels on our web site the hotels will be operating
normally. The beaches and resort towns on the Andaman sea are in many
instances cleaner than before and the infrastructure has been improved in the
process of rebuilding and recovery.
Phuket
The island of Phuket experienced relatively minor damage from the tsunami. Now
nearly all resorts and hotels are open and ready for business, some at
rates reduced from the last season, some renovated and fitted with the finest
new amenities, remodeled and catering to the changing needs of the modern
traveller.
Patong
The main resort town of Patong was hit by the tsunami along the beach and the
beach road, while most of the town was completely unaffected and businesses
away from the beachfront have been operating normally througout 2005. By now
the whole town is operating normally and most beachfront restaurants and
businesses have re-opened. The nightlife of Patong is as bustling and lively as
ever and it's the fun beach resort town that it's fame rests on.
Karon & Kata
Karon and Kata have been completely cleared up and the local hotels and resorts
that were affected by the tsunami have been renovated so that there is no more
damage visible anywhere in these popular beach resorts.
Other beaches
Other Phuket beaches were largely unaffected by the tsunami and individual
resorts which incurred damage have now been fully repaired and are open for
business.
Khao Lak
Khao Lak was most heavily affected as the tsunami waves hit at the most
unfortunate angle and many of the hotels as well as most of the infrastructure
was at least partly destroyed. However, now most tourism infrastructure
including banks, dive shops, restaurants etc. have been rebuilt. Some
hotels and over 20 resorts have already reopened while others were
newly built. Electricity and water supply are working normally.
Phi Phi Island
Phi Phi Island incurred substantial damage, especially at the exposed and
central Ton Sai Bay area of Phi Phi Don. The debris has now been cleared in a
community effort and many shops as well as a number of hotels have reopened.
Hotels and resorts away from Ton Sai Bay were largely unaffected and are open
for business as normal.
At Ao Nang Bay of Krabi some hotels and businesses at the beach front were
affected by the tsunami, but the force of the waves was not sufficient to do
major damage. All hotels and resorts of
Krabi are now operating normall and the infrastructure of the bay is
unaffected.
On Ko Lanta now most hotels and resorts are operating normally and some have
been newly opened since the tsunami. The infrastructure is also in fine working
order.
