Phuket, “The Pearl of the Andaman”, combines great beaches, a rich cultural heritage, excellent hotels and leisure facilities with a first-rate infrastructure to make it the most popular holiday destination in Thailand.
The island has all the ingredients for a smooth and enjoyable holiday. For Thailand first-timers traveling on their own itinerary, Phuket is definitely the destination of choice. Arriving at Phuket International Airport, possibly with global 5-star airline Thai Airways, you will already start enjoying professional and hassle-free services. Going to your hotel, you’ll notice the excellent road network which makes excursions with a rental car very easy. You’ll also get a first glimpse of Phuket’s rich cultural heritage with Malay, Portuguese and Chinese influences, which are reflected in architecture, costumes and a great variety of food. The island has some of the best hotels in Thailand, most on clean sunset beaches. Phuket features probably the largest variety of accommodation in Thailand, from 5 star luxury to 3 star comfort, with a similar variety of prices. Activities abound with anything from bungee jumping to outstanding golf courses; water sports such as sailing and surfing, diving on outlying islands and many many more.
To give you an honest overview, we won’t leave out the drawbacks: They include overdevelopment on some beaches, especially on Patong Beach, high prices (by Thai, not international standards) in the high season and a relatively large number of vehicles coming over from mainland Thailand over a bridge. While the high season may have more stable (sunny) weather, Phuket is also a great destination in the low (rainy season), with much lower prices and much fewer people, easier excursions under clouds in rain-washed air and better and quicker availability of all services. Unspoilt by its recent success as a tourist destination, Phuket still delivers on its reputation as the gem of the Andaman Sea.
Please note: Star ratings for hotels in Thailand
have to be taken with a grain of salt, as there is no established rating
system in the Kindom. Such a system is currently being developed under the auspices of the Thai Hotels Association and other industry bodies, and only some hotels are officially rates as yet. Today, many hotels effectively rate themselves. We try to augment this information by gathering data form agents like Studiosus® in Germany and other agencies known for rigorous evaluation of the hotels' quality and service standards.
Besides that, the old adage "You
get what yo pay for." holds true. At a given location hotels who can charge higher rates are usually better by international standards. Then again, the high level of service mindedness, hospitality and customer care in Thailand will leave most visitors satisfied inspite of the hotel's "official" rating, and even if they don't get every tick on the reviewer's checklist.
